Meet Rodney & Jake

We are Rodney Stoutenger and Jake Garrison; designers, entrepreneurs, experience makers, and home improvement enthusiasts in Austin Tx.

For over a decade we’ve been working together to build some of Austin’s favorite business. We crafted some of the Austin area’s favorite landscape designs. Folks from all over central Texas found a community of plant lovers with us and filled their homes with our plants and decor. You’ve seen our work around town, featured in magazines and the web, and even on TV (HGTV’s Yard Crashers and Netflix’s QueerEye).

Now we find ourselves starting over. All our energy is now focused on the growth of our new businesses, finding new passions, and transforming our 1960’s home into our perfect paradise. We love sharing our work, knowledge and lives with you!

The guest bedroom has probably had the least amoun

The guest bedroom has probably had the least amount of work done to it since we moved in. The only real project we’ve done in here is remove/hide a window to nowhere that had plywood on the other side. Never painted it, and it basically started to become a storage room.The last two days Rodney finally scratched the itch and gave the room a fresh coat of paint, some accent murals, repurposed some other furniture from around the house, and gave my grandmother’s lamp some new life with an updated shade.Of course, the #nagel’s are front and center.The space feels rejuvenated and we can’t wait to have guest! LOVE how this room has evolved over the years. Some time around 1998 the owners at the time converted the car port into a room. In the listing it was billed as a “dining room” but felt super disconnected from the rest of the house. We were not even here a full month when we knocked the wall between it and the living room. The more dramatic of the two chair transformations (after then before).
These were given to us by Rodney’s grandmother yearrrs ago at our last house when we made a makeshift table out of an old Industrial Electrical Spool.They were four chairs from goodwill that seemed to belong to an office in some past life. After sitting in a corner for years as extra chairs, we realized the backs were fabric wrapped wood. All we needed to do is strip them down, reupholster the seat, sand/stain the wood... and of course repaint the “silver” body to be a brassy gold.They turned out amazing. The unique less than perfect wood used for the backing makes the chairs look decades older than they original manufacture (around 2001) with an almost vintage school chair vibe.#diy #gaydiy #husbands #homedecore #upsycling

Before and After (well, after THEN before) of one of the dining rooms chair styles we refinished.
We wanted to go for a darker/mid century feel and have been looking for chairs for almost two years. Who knew they were so expensive!
We found 6 of these at @uptownmodernaustin last year at like $250 for all (vs $450 per chair everywhere else). Here it is! The final results of last weekends project! We removed the frames of two glass sliding doors and reused them as windows in our dining room looking into our “courtyard” space. The goal was to get a lot more light- I think we achieved that! ✅
